Endovenous Ablation

Endovenous Ablation | Long Island | Manhattan | New York CityEndovenous ablation is a minimally invasive alternative to vein stripping for the treatment of varicose veins and its common underlying cause, venous reflux, which offers patients effective results with less pain, less bleeding and shorter recovery times than traditional procedures. This procedure can be performed for cosmetic or medical purposes, depending on each patient's individual condition and goals for treatment. Up to 98% of patients achieve successful results from the endovenous ablation procedure.

The endovenous ablation procedure can be performed using laser or radiofrequency energy on nearly any patient suffering from bulging and painful varicose veins. Dr. Attkiss will determine which approach is most effective for your individual leg anatomy and vein severity. Patients can experience relief from these symptoms and from the unsightly appearance of the veins through this minimally invasive procedure. Endovenous ablation is covered by most insurance companies when performed for medical purposes.

Endovenous Ablation Procedure

Endovenous ablation uses laser or radiofrequency energy to heat damaged veins and seal them shut. During the procedure, the skin is numbed with local anesthesia, and a tiny fiber is inserted into the skin and guided to the saphenous vein through ultrasound imaging. The vein is then surrounded by a small amount of liquid and exposed to the laser or radiofrequency energy for approximately three minutes before the probe is removed. This procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance to ensure precise placement of the probe and the most effective results.

The delivered energy causes the vein to be sealed off and diverts blood flow to healthier surrounding veins. The probe is removed from the vein and a small dressing and compression bandages are applied to the area. The whole procedure usually takes less than an hour to perform. Endovenous ablation is ideal for nearly any patient with large, painful varicose veins.

Results and Recovery of Endovenous Ablation

Endovenous Ablation | Long Island | Manhattan | New York CityAfter endovenous ablation, patients may experience mild bruising and swelling in the treated area, but are likely able to return to regular activities shortly after treatment. In most cases, patients will need to wear compression garments for several weeks to promote proper healing and relieve any symptoms or side effects. Dr. Attkiss will provide you with specific post-operative instructions to facilitate a fast and efficient healing process.

The results of the endovenous ablation procedure are usually visible within a week or two after treatment, at which point symptoms tend to subside as well. These procedures provide permanent removal of varicose veins. However, it is important for patients to be aware that other veins may become affected in the future. Preventive measures such as losing weight and engaging in an active and healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of varicose veins.

Risks of Endovenous Ablation

Although considered a safe procedure, there are certain risks associated with endovenous ablation, as there are with any type of surgical treatment. Some of these risks may include numbness, infection, unsuccessful results and deep vein thrombosis, although this is considered rare. Dr. Attkiss will discuss any risks with you, as well as address any concerns you may have, before performing this procedure.
